ST GEORGE’S, May 22, 2016 – The Grenada Cricket Association (GCA) has named four newcomers in the national team to participate in the 2016 Windward Islands Two-Day Senior Cricket Tournament, starting this weekend in Grenada.

Schoolboy Johann Jeremiah, middle order batsman Cyprian Forsyth and fast bowlers Sherman Lewis and Daron Nedd have been called up for national duties.

The team, which will be led by the experienced Devon Smith, will be without wicketkeeper-batsman Andre Fletcher and pacer Preston McSween.

Fletcher is preparing to join the West Indies team for the upcoming Tri-Nation One-Day International Series and McSween, who is contracted with the Barbados Pride, is undergoing rehabilitation for an injury and as a result both players were not considered for selection.

However, the two Grenadian cricketers – Ryan John and Emmanuel Stewart – who were members of the victorious West Indies Under-19 World Cup team have been included in the 14-member squad.

The full team is Devon Smith (captain), Denis Smith, Keone George, Roland Cato, Emmanuel Stewart, Rudolph Paul, Ryan John, Denis George, Sherman Lewis, Josh Thomas, Craig Phillip, Johann Jeremiah, Cyprian Forsyth and Daron Nedd.

The coach is Ricky Williams and Randel Baptiste is named as manager.

“The team is a good blend of youth and experience,” said Dwain Gill, President of the GCA. “We believe that the majority of the players have a decent chance of breaking into the Windward Islands set up while three of the four teenagers are being groomed for possible selection to the West Indies U19 team for the 2018 ICC Youth Word Cup in New Zealand. Our watchwords are “Development” and “Progression”.”

Gill said that Jeremiah has been identified as one for the future.  “We would like him to follow a similar path to Emmanuel Stewart.  He is our top schoolboy batsman with a double century and a number of centuries under his belt.  We believe he has the potential to go all the way.”

Forsyth, a former U19 player who has played cricket for the University of the West Indies while studying in Barbados, is described has been a consistent performer and among the top scorers for St George in the recent Super50 Inter-Parish Tournament.

“He is a very intelligent player and has been a consistent performer over the past few years. This year he has scored runs against the best bowling attacks in the country and is now regarded as one of the best players of spin in Grenada.  He is also a handy off spinner,” said Gill.

Both Lewis and Nedd have also played youth cricket for Grenada with the former picking up wickets with the new ball.

“Nedd is one of the fastest bowlers in the country and has unsettled batsmen in local leagues. We believe that the West Indies U19 selectors will be interested in him.”

Grenada will play defending champion Dominica in one of two opening matches on Saturday. Both teams meet at Progress Park, St Andrew while St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia will play at the National Stadium.
