KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, July 12, 2016 – Grenada is one win away from retaining the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Under-23 Netball Tournament.

The unbeaten Grenadians take on host St Vincent and the Grenadines in a winner-takes-all game on Wednesday at the Arnos Vale Netball Complex.

Grenada cruised to Wednesday’s clash with victories against St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica and St Lucia.

The Spice Girls opened the tournament on Saturday with a win over the Kittians, leading all quarters 10-7, 19-14, 33-24 and 42-31. Renisha Stafford scored 24 from 31 attempts, Carlene Alexander 7-9, Tiffany Frederick 6-9 and Kelsey Jeremiah 5-8.

Alliyah Gibson led the shooting for St Kitts with 20 from 25 and Tarren Tweed 11 off 19.

On Sunday, Grenada also defeated Dominica after having the best first quarter of the tournament. They led 18-5, 28-14, 37-21 and 44-26. Stafford again led the shooting with 23 from 31 attempts, Alexander 14-20 and Frederick 7-9. Shelle St Rose converted 23 from 28 and Kyla Winston 3-4 for Dominica.

On Monday, the Grenadians rallied back from a slow start against St Lucia to win 38-21, after leading the quarters 8-3, 19-12 and 29-17.

Stafford choked up 22 from 38 and Frederick 16-25 for Grenada. Megan Nestor was the best shooter for St Lucia with 12 from 20. Ianna Hippolyte 5-11 and Jo-Ann Anderson 4-12 also contributed for the St Lucians.

The national team, captained by Shakera Fortune, will have to rely on their experienced players for their final game. The Vincentians could be a formidable competitor at home.

“We’ve not been consistent in the shooting but I’m confident that the girls will get the job done,” coach Oberon Pitterson-Nattie told GrenadaSports. “The girls’ spirits are high and we just have to play our game while maintaining calm but strategic.”

The Grenada team includes three teenagers including 15-year-old Alexander, 17-year-old Kerissa Thomas and 19-year-old Jomelar Billy.

Five of the players on the team were members of the victorious national team which won the Challenge Title at Netball Europe in May. They are Fortune, Stafford, Frederick, Keshanice Mitchell and Kerissa Thomas.

The full team: Shakera Fortune (captain), Tiffany Frederick, Renisha Stafford, Keshanice Mitchell, Jeimella John, Jomelar Billy, Tarheraw McDonald, Kelsey Jeremiah, Kerissa Thomas, Carlene Alexander.
