ST GEORGE’S, January 24, 2016 – The Grenada Football Association (GFA) has endorsed the candidature of Gianni Infantino in the FIFA presidential elections.

GFA president Cheney Joseph announced the endorsement in an interview with GrenadaSports on Saturday following the inauguration of a new athletic and football stadium in St George’s which was also attended by Infantino and other football officials.

“The GFA is lending its support to Mr Gianni. We believe firmly that his manifesto speaks to what our needs are and most importantly it speaks to the need of the Caribbean,” said Joseph who is also a vice president of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU).

“I would encourage my other Caribbean colleagues to do same,” said Joseph who is also joining the Barbados Football Association in endorsing Infantino.

The 45-year-old Swiss, who is the general secretary of UEFA, the governing body for football in Europe, is among five candidates who are vying for the FIFA presidency in the February 26 special election to replace Sepp Blatter.

The other candidates are former FIFA vice president Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al Khalifa of Bahrain, former FIFA official Jerome Champagne of France and South African businessman Tokyo Sexwale.

Joseph believes that Infantino is the right man for the job and will bring about the reforms that FIFA need at this time.

“He has had an affection for the Caribbean, not because of his decision to run for the office, but UEFA has been supporting Caribbean football in many ways and Grenada has been a recipient of many support from them and I’ll only hope that when he steps into the “Oval Office” (FIFA Presidency) he would continue to do not just for Grenada but for football wherever there’s need for further development,” he said.

Earlier this month, Infantino made a presentation to CFU delegates in Antigua.
