NEWCASTLE, UK, May 13, 2016 – Grenada’s National Netball team is on course to win the Challenge Section of the 2016 Netball Europe Tournament here in Newcastle.

Playing in the tournament for the first time, Grenada has won its first three matches and only Switzerland and United States between them and the Challenge Trophy. The Americans are ranked 25th in the world and Switzerland is at number 28, two spots higher than Grenada.

But the Grenadians opened its campaign in the Challenge Section of the Netball Europe Championship in Newcastle, England with back-to-back victories on Friday and then rallied back to beat the defending champion.

They defeated Israel in their opening match 87-19 and then took care of Gibraltar 82-38 before overcoming a strong challenge from the Republic of Ireland.

The Spice Girls led in all quarters against Israel – 23-4, 44-12, 66-17 and limit the Israelis to only two goals in the final quarter 87-19.

Goal shoots Lottysha Cato converted 55 of her 61 attempts while Renisha Stafford added 12 of 13. Goal attacks Cecile Roberts (19 from 22) and Sharon Jeremiah (1-1) added support in front of the pole.

It was a similar domination against Gibraltar with scores of 18-10, 37-17, 57-28 and finally 82-38.

Cato was again in top form with a 94 per cent shooting average, converting 78 goals from 83 attempts in all four quarters. Roberts (3-3) and Stafford (1 from 2) shared the goal attack position.

Republic of Ireland tested the Grenadians by taking a five-goal lead (17-12) at the end of the first quarter but the ‘Spice Girls’ battled back to take a 27-26 lead at the half interval. They extended that lead to six goals (44-38) at the end of the third quarter and maintained that lead to the end, 59-53.

Cato converted 56 of her 60 attempts to be the leading scorer with 189 goals from 204 attempts from three matches.

The Grenadians could clinch the challenge tournament on Saturday with victories over Switzerland and the United States.
