KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, July 13, 2016 – Grenada retained the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Under-23 Netball Tournament with a 30-26 victory over St Vincent and the Grenadines in the championship match here on Wednesday.
The Grenadians led in all quarters to keep the title they won in St Kitts one year ago. Grenada led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and then increased the margins in the pursuing intervals – 16-4, 24-19 and 30-26.
“It has been competitive and throughout the tournament the matches have been close. It tells you that there is a lot of competitiveness among the teams,” said coach Oberon Pitterson-Nattie.
Grenada, consisting of three teenagers and five players who represented Grenada in Netball Europe in May, ended with 154 goals, 104 against which is a goal difference of 50.
Earlier, St Lucia survived a last quarter rally from St Kitts and Nevis to clinch the fourth position. St Lucia won 46-42. Dominica finished third in the five-team tournament.
Grenada picked up most of the prizes at the end of the tournament including the most disciplined, defensive and attacking team awards.
Kerissa Thomas was the best defensive player and top Grenadian player while Jeimella John received the award for the best centre court player and player of the tournament.
St Lucia’s Joanne Anderson was the most accurate shooter of the tournament. Grenada finished third in the team shooting competition with Renisha Stafford and Tiffany Frederick. Stafford also finished third in the individual shooting competition which was won by Kadesha Williams of St Vincent and the Grenadines followed by Megan Neston of St Lucia.
The next tournament is scheduled to be played in Grenada in 2017.
