SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, September 2, 2014 (GrenadaSports) – Grenada’s Senior National Football Team will have a final training session on Tuesday ahead of their opening campaign in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Men’s Caribbean Cup First Round Qualifiers here on Wednesday.

The “Spice Boyz” are grouped with French Guiana, Curacao and host Puerto Rico with the two top teams advancing to the second round to be staged October 8-12.

They will play the French-speaking nation on Wednesday in a Group 4 double-header at the Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium. The other game features Curacao and Puerto Rico.

Grenada will play Curacao on Friday while Puerto Rico takes on French Guiana and the group stage wraps on Sunday with Curacao against French Guiana and Grenada playing Puerto Rico.

French Guiana is favoured in this group after coming through the preliminary phase with impressive wins against British Virgin Islands (6-0), Turks and Caicos (6-0) and Aruba (2-0).

Coach Anthony Modeste will have to demand more of his players if they are to advance to the next round and possibly a chance of qualifying for their third appearance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Tournament.

“Our goal is the Gold Cup but we have to take it step-by-step,” Modeste told GrenadaSports ahead of a training session. “It’s a challenge but the players are up for it.”

In their only competitive games this year, Grenada defeated Dominica (5-3) but lost to St Lucia (1-0) and drew (0-0) with St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Windward Islands Tournament earlier this year.

The last time Grenada played French Guiana was during Round Two of the Caribbean Cup on November 14, 2012. The teams played to a 1-1 draw. French Guiana and Haiti advanced to the final round from that group which also included Guyana.
