NEW JERSEY, October 7, 2016 – The SUNSHINE Awards Organization announced in New Jersey that the Grenada Olympic Champion will receive the 2016 SUNSHINE Award for his contribution to sports, Grenada and the Caribbean by extension.
The award will be presented at the 28th Annual SUNSHINE Awards in New York City. The black-tie event is scheduled for Saturday October 15, at the AXA Equitable Center 787 Seventh Avenue at 51st Street in New York City.
The SUNSHINE Awards was founded 28 years ago to recognize excellence in the performing arts, education, humanity, science, and sports of the various Caribbean countries. Over the years, the program has expanded in depth and breadth with a global view including countries from Africa, South America, Central America, Europe and India.
Complimenting the SUNSHINE Awards Organization, the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr the Right Honorable Keith Mitchell noted, “Kirani James is an outstanding Ambassador for Grenada and an excellent role model for our young people. His prowess in the field of athletics has been unprecedented and we continue to honour him here at home. In that regard, as Prime Minister, I support wholeheartedly, any other initiative to do the same, given his tremendous success globally, his admirable work ethic, his humility and steadfast character. I therefore commend the organizers of the SUNSHINE Awards Organization for your overall vision in undertaking this initiative to recognize the excellence of our Caribbean brothers and sisters and in particular for nominating this meritorious young man, our beloved Kirani James, for the 2016 SUNSHINE Award.”
