Dr Keith MitchellST GEORGE’S, November 25, 2015 – More than two-thirds of the 2016 budget allocation for the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports will instead be directed to the New Imani Programme.

In delivering the 2016 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure on Wednesday, Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell said that “this budget provides EC$53.7 million (US$19.9 million) for youth and sport development, of which $31.4 million is for administration and delivery of the New Imani Programme.”

Dr Mitchell described 2016 as exciting for sports in Grenada with the unveiling of the stadium and staging of major sporting events.

“Thanks to the generosity of the People’s Republic of China, Grenada will soon take delivery of our state of the art Athletics and Football Stadium. Next year will be exciting as Grenada hosts several major tournaments including Intercol, Windward Island Secondary School Games, CARIFTA and FIFA under 17 women,” he said.

He said the lighting of the playing fields will continue including the National Cricket Stadium at Queens Park.

The 2016 budget provides for total expenditure of EC$1.12 billion (US$416.9 million).
