ST GEORGE’S, November 9, 2016 – Ministry of Sports took the major awards at the conclusion of the 2016 Dutch Lady Inter-Sector Netball Tournament at the Tanteen Sporting Complex on the weekend.

Ministry of Sports copped the top prize along with awards for the best attacking and defending teams. Ministries Combined and Huggins finished runners-up in the tournament.

In the final set of matches played, Huggins defeated Sandals 43-15, Ministries Combined beat Republic Bank 45-12 and Hubbards stopped Small Business 36-31.

Other awards were presented to the Republic Bank as the best disciplined team and Mary ‘Eve’ Joseph of Small Business for the oldest player of the tournament.

Joseph, along with Bernadette Roberts of Hubbards, are the two longest competitors of the tournament. They have been players since 1992.

The top players from the participating teams were also recognised including Jana Calliste (Huggins), Kareen Alexis (Hubbards), Randy Boca (Ministries Combined), Lottysha Cato (Ministry of Sports), Cecile Roberts (Republic Bank), Keisha Simon (Sandals) and Akelsha Cato (Small Business).

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Jacinta Joseph and Margaret Roberts of Hubbards presented the prizes to the outstanding netballers and teams.

President of the Grenada Netball Association (GNA) Glynis Roberts described this year’s tournament a success and confident of its growth in the coming years.

“It has been a good year for netball, not only for the national teams, but for club tournaments. We’re also seeing the spectators and sponsors are returning to the sport,” said Roberts who assumed the presidency last year.

The sponsors this year including Jonas Browne & Hubbards, through Dutch Lady milk, Ricks Café, Republic Bank, Sandals La Source, George F Huggins, Grenada Breweries Ltd and Sweet Tradition.

The GNA is preparing to participate in the INF World Youth (Under-21) Tournament in Botswana next July. It’s the first-time Grenada will be participating in an international youth netball tournament.

The GNA has embarked on a fundraising drive and has since set up a gofundme page.
