ST GEORGE’S, October 20, 2015 – There has been growing calls for the refurbished Athletics and Football Stadium to be named after Olympic 400 metres champion Kirani James.
The government recently announced that the contractors will hand over the stadium in October with an unveiling ceremony for January 2016.
However, there has been skepticism about the naming of the facility which will be the venue for major athletics and football events.
Callers took to a popular talkshow on Tuesday demanding that the government delivers on a promise made by the previous government to name the stadium in honour of the achievements of James who won the island’s first Olympic gold medal. He also won a gold medal in the 400m at the 2011 IAAF World Championships and the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
They have also started a petition calling for the stadium to be named in James’ honour.
They are concerned that a sign erected on the stadium (see photo) is an indication that the authorities have no plans to name the facility in honour of the quarter-miler.
James, who is in Grenada on private business, departs the island on Wednesday. However, he used the opportunity to visit his former primary and secondary schools as well as teachers and friends in the community.
