Zurich Diamond League AthleticsZURICH, Switzerland, September 1, 2016 – Grenadian quarter-miler Bralon Taplin pushed Olympic bronze medallist LaShawn Merritt of the United States to the tape at the Zurich Diamond League here on Thursday.

Taplin, an Olympic finalist in Rio last month, powered home to catch up with Merritt and to decide the race on the line.

Taplin finished second in 44.70 seconds to Merritt’s 44.64 for the win.

It was a brilliant display from Taplin to end his 2016 season after failing to medal at the Olympic Games.

“Honestly, I was tired. I was thinking that I would run that fast. I was just hoping not to get beat. I know that LaShawn Merritt will run a fast time but I was just hoping not to get beaten by the other guys,” said Taplin.

“At 300 (metres) I realised that I still got something left so then I started kicking and I started closing in on him, and the closer I got the harder I pushed but I kinda kicked a little too late and I thought I was going to lock up but then realised that I wasn’t so I kicked harder and harder.”

Taplin said that his consistency throughout this year is a confidence booster for the 2017 season.

Taplin speaks to GrenadaSports after Thursday’s race.
