EUGENE, OR, June 7, 2016 – Two Grenadian athletes are chasing history when the 2016 NCAA Division 1 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships get going here on Wednesday.
Lindon Victor of Texas A&M University and Emron Gibbs of Southern Mississippi are competing for individual titles and favoured to win medals in the four-day event.
Victor, fresh from his record setting performance in winning the decathlon at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships last month, is the top ranked decathlete in the NCAA.
A victory for Victor will make him the second Grenadian to win the NCAA title following in the footsteps of his brother Kurt Felix who won the 2012 title.
The Grenadian set a new national record as well as SEC meet record when he clinched the title with 8,446 points. This leaves him with the second best performance in the world this year, trailing Pan American Games champion Damian Warner of Canada with 8523 points.
Victor will be challenged by Georgia’s Maicel Uibo and Devon Williams. Uibo, an Estonian native, is entering with 8315 points while Williams is at 8116 points.
Gibbs is among the three top javelin throwers entering the competition on Wednesday.
Gibbs (73.14m) trails Ioannis Kyriazis of Texas A&M (75.70) and John Ampomah of Middle Tennessee State (73.94).
The Javelin event begins at 8:45 p.m. ET while the first event of the Decathlon is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
