Nedd, Gill & Stewart

HARARE, Zimbabwe, July 29, 2017 – West Indies Under-19 beat Zimbabwe Under-19 by 70 runs on Saturday to win the Youth One-Day International (ODI) Series 2-1.

Grenadians Emmanuel Stewart and Darron Nedd starred with the bat and ball in the Windies’ victory.

Captain Stewart made an unbeaten 76 as the regional side reached 257 for four in their 50 overs. Stewart compiled his innings with almost a run-a-ball, hitting four fours after facing 79 deliveries.

Keagan Simmons hit the top score of 89 and Bhaskar Yadram added 65.

In reply, Zimbabwe U-19 made 187 off 42.5 overs with Nedd finishing with figures of four for 33 off seven overs. Yadram had two for 20 from six overs.

Team manager Grenadian Dwain Gill described the African tour as learning experience for the players but still some work to be done to successfully defend their world title.

“It was a learning experience for the youngsters. It wasn’t easy beating South Africa and Zimbabwe at home and in unfamiliar conditions but the boys stuck to the task well,” he said.

“It’s a huge step towards preparation for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Youth World Cup in New Zealand in January/February 2018. There is still a lot of work to be done if we are to become the first team to successfully defend the U19 World Cup.”

The team, which also won the series against South Africa, departs Zimbabwe on Sunday.
